How to keep YouTube playing in the background on mobile

Listening to a podcast, a mix or a long talk while you do something else is the most common reason people go looking for an alternative player. Here is what works on each platform.

Why the YouTube app stops

The YouTube app deliberately pauses playback when you leave it or lock your screen, on both iOS and Android. Background audio is one of the features reserved for Premium subscribers. Nothing is broken - it is working as designed.

On iPhone and iPad

Playing a video from a browser page rather than the app changes the behaviour, because Safari handles media differently from the YouTube app. Two things to try once a video is playing in the browser:

  • Picture-in-picture. Pop the player out and it keeps running while you use other apps.
  • Control Centre. If audio pauses when you leave the tab, swipe into Control Centre and press play - audio often resumes and continues with the screen locked.

Behaviour varies between iOS versions, so treat this as a thing to try rather than a guarantee.

On Android

Chrome on Android will often continue browser audio in the background, and the media notification gives you play and pause controls from the lock screen. Picture-in-picture is also well supported at the system level, so a popped-out player keeps going while you use other apps.

For fully reliable background audio with the screen off, a native client like NewPipe handles it at the OS level rather than depending on browser behaviour - at the cost of sideloading an APK.

The reliable option: YouTube Premium

Background play is one of the main things a Premium subscription actually buys, and it is the only method guaranteed to keep working across OS updates on both platforms. If background listening is something you do daily, it is the option that will stop costing you attention.

Using SkipAds for this

SkipAds supports picture-in-picture, so you can pop the player out and keep watching or listening while you do something else. It runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install on either platform - and because playback goes through YouTube's own player, the creator still gets the view.
